Tomar's last minute desertion has left Congress in a tight spot because it would not be able to field any other candidate from the Gautam Budh Nagar seat as the last date for filing nomination has ended and hence the seat goes uncontested from its side.

On Thursday, another party leader and Union Textiles Minister K Sambasiva Rao resigned from the Union Cabinet protesting bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh, fuelling speculation that he may join the saffron bandwagon.

Another embarrassment was invited by sitting Congress MP from Fatehgarh Sahib constituency, Sukhdev Singh Libra, who joined the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) after being denied the party ticket.

The list of Congress leaders deserting the party doesn’t ends here. In the past, leaders like Satpal Maharaj, Rao Inderjit Singh and Bhagirath Prasad had left the party to join BJP.

Senior Congress leaders like P Chidambaram, Jayanthi Natarajan and Manish Tewari are already outside the battle field as they refused to contest the elections.

Several UP Congress leaders are also reportedly going to quit the party. In Madhya Pradesh, Bhagirath Prasad had already ditched Congress to join hands with saffron party. Now, MLA Dinesh Ahirvar also joined BJP.

KS Rao held senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh responsible for the exodus in party. Reacting to it, Ramesh termed Rao as an opportunist.
