Kozhikode: In an explosion at Nadapuram area here on Sunday, five persons were killed and three others injured when country bombs being illegally manufactured exploded, police said.

Three persons died on the spot last night while two others succumbed to their injuries at a hospital this morning, informed the police.

Three injured persons were undergoing treatment at different hospitals where the condition of two of them was stated to be serious, police said, adding that the explosion occurred at an un-inhabited plot at Narikkattiri in Nadapuram.

The deceased have been identified as Riyaz, Shamir, Shabir, Shabil and Rafeeq, hailing from Nadapuram region. All the victims were involved in manufacturing the bombs when the explosion occurred.

Meanwhile, senior police officials visited the spot and launched widespread raids in the surrounding areas in the wake of the incident.

On February 20, police had recovered nine steel bombs, concealed in a bucket, at Chelakkad in Nadapuram.
