Saharanpur: In a callous incident, five members of a jeweller’s family, including two minors, were mercilessly killed by unidentified assailants in Saharanpur district of Uttar Pradesh on Friday.

Pradeep Sehgal, his father Ramesh Sehgal, wife Preeti and the couple's two children - Krishna and Basu - were found murdered inside their house in Janakpuri area. All were hit by rods on their heads, police said.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Vinod Kumar, BSP MP Jagdish Rana faced the fury of the angry mob while visiting the place. The protesting crowds held SSP and DIG hostage for at least an hour. MP Rana had to return seeing the strong protest of the people. Cabinet Minister Dharam Singh Saini also had to face people’s wrath.


The Mayawati government directed the police to take stern action against those responsible for the crime and transferred SSP and SP Pramod Kumar Singh. Circle officer (CO) Mukul Dwivedi while the local police station in-charge Om Veer Singh was suspended.

Sources said that preliminary investigations indicate that the five were attacked with some blunt and heavy object. “However, the motive behind the incident is still not clear”, they added.

Notably, the family resided near District Magistrate and state Cabinet Minister Dharam Singh Saini’s mansion.
