Earth (1998)- Deepa Mehta

Set in India's partition era, 'Earth' received high praise in India and abroad. Pulitzer Prize winning critic Roger Ebert praised the movie for its universal appeal and gave it 3 out of 4 stars. The movie also received great reviews from top US newspapers.

Liar's Dice (2013)- Geetu Mohandas
Starring Geetanjali Thapa and Nawazuddin Siddiqui in lead roles, this movie was screened at the Sundance Film Festival and International Film Festival Rotterdam. It won a special jury award at Sofia International Film Festival and was India's entry for the 87th Academy Awards.

Salaam Bombay (1988)- Mira Nair

This movie is about how Bombay street kids survive and end up in the situation they are in. The movie was appreciated by the audience worldwide and it won the National Board of Review Award for Top Foreign Film, the Golden Camera and Audience Awards at the Cannes Film Festival, and three awards at the Montréal World Film Festival. Another feather in the cap was movie listing in 'The Best 1,000 Movies Ever Made' by the top US media house.

Nayakan (1987)- Mani Ratnam
This Tamil crime film starring Kamal Haasan  released in 1987. The film won critical acclaim and was included in top magazine's 2005 list of 'All Time 100 Best Films', which went to the extent of comparing it with the Hollywood cult, Godfather.

Court (2014)- Chaitanya Tamhane
This courtroom drama aims to show the flaws in Indian Judicial system. Court won the Best Film award at 71st Venice International Film Festival and is India's official entry to Academy awards this year.
