Nepal earthquake killed over 9000 people

The Nepal earthquake on April 2015 also known as the Gorkha earthquake took huge toll of lives. Over 9000 people were killed and around 23,000 were injured. The earthquake with a magnitude of 7.9 Richter scale wrecked havoc on 25th April. Its epicentre was East of of the district of Lamjung. Thousands of people became homeless and were in search of food and shelters.

Continued aftershocks occurred across Nepal at the intervals of 15-20 minutes. A major aftershock with a magnitude of 7.3 felt on  May 12, 2015. Its epicentre was near the Chinese border between the capital of Kathmandu and Mount Everest. It took lives of around 200 people and 2500 were also got injured.

PM Narendra Modi launched MUDRA bank

To 'fund the unfunded' self-employed as well as small businesses, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 8th April launched the Micro Units Development and Refinance Agency Ltd (MUDRA) Yojana that will offer loans of up to Rs 10 lakh at low rate of interest. Finance Minister Arun Jaitley proposed the setting up of MUDRA bank in his 2015-16 budget. Jiji Mammen has been appointed as the CEO of MUDRA bank.

The Pradhan Mantri MUDRA Yojana, which has a corpus of Rs 20,000 crore, can lend between Rs 50,000-Rs 10 lakh to small entrepreneurs. It focuses on the 5.75 crore self-employed who use funds of Rs 11 lakh crore and thus provide jobs to 12 crore people. MUDRA has been set up for development and refinancing activities relating to micro units.

Indian Premier League, Season 8

The opening ceremony of the 8th edition of Indian Premier League was held at Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata on 7th of April. This was followed by series of matches spread over a span of more than one month. The final match of the tournament was held on 24th of May at Eden Gardens in Kolkata and was won by Mumbai Indians, who defeated Chennai Super Kings in the dramatic final. Defending champions Kolkata Night Riders put up a disappointing show and could not even reach the quarterfinals.

Sania Mirza become world number one women's doubles player

Sania Mirza became the first Indian tennis player to become world number one in women's doubles. This came after a series of doubles wins with her partner Martina Hingis who shared the position with her. Sania and Hingis won a total of ten titles in 2015, which proved to be the most successful year for the Indian tennis ace. These titles include the likes of China Open, US Open and Guangzhou International Women's Open. Twenty five of Sania's titles were in doubles events.  

India completed evacuating citizens from Yemen

The heroic mission by the Indian government to evacuate Indian citizens from the war-torn Yemen was completed on April 10. India was successful in its massive evacuation efforts of pulling out 5,600 people including 4,640 Indians and 960 nationals from 41 countries. After the success of operation Rahat, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj said, India's approach in the evacuation process has been guided by the spirit of 'vasudev kutumbakam' (the whole world is one).

While giving details about the evacuation process and related developments, she informed that the Indian Embassy in Yemen have been relocated to Djibouti and it will continue to operate from there till the situation returns to normal in Yemen.

LPG Gas Subsidy

Prime Minister Narendra Modi initiated the ambitious programme to encourage LPG consumers to give up their subsidy. Petroleum & Natural Gas Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said the government launched an initiative to voluntarily surrender LPG subsidy and join the GiveitUp movement, who can afford to pay the market price for LPG. This will enable the government to utilize the limited resources to reach out to the economically backward classes. PM Modi urged the consumers on Mann ki Baat to join “Give It Up” campaign for the well-to-do sections to voluntarily give up LPG subsidy.

This is the second major initiative by the government to save on LPG subsidy and leakages after the direct benefit transfer of LPG to bank accounts. Publicity campaigns through various media like Print, TV, Radio, posters, banners, hoardings are some measures which have been undertaken by the government  to motivate the affluent people to give up subsidy voluntarily. PM Modi at Jagran Forum highlighted details about the schemes launched by his governance and informed that 52 lakh people have given up their LPG subsidy.

Net Neutrality in India

Net Neutrality is the principle which says that the Internet service provider should enable access to all content and applications regardless of the source, and without favouring or blocking particular products or websites. The Indian government's decision to block zero rating plans such as  Airtel Zero and in view of net neutrality was majorly opposed. On April 7, the  Communication and Information Technology Minister, Ravi Shankar Prasad said that committee will be formed to study the net neutrality issue.

On 10 February, Facebook along with Reliance Communication launched in India which aimed to provide free access to 38 websites through an application. Only Bing was made available as the search engine. Airtel on the other hand announced 'Airtel Zero' scheme on April, 2015. Under the scheme, app firms sign a contract and Airtel provides the apps for free to its customers. The reports of Flipkart, an e-commerce firm, joining the 'Airtel Zero' scheme drew negative response.
