Making electioneering in Punjab spicy, several folk singers have thrown their hats in the ring against heavyweights for state assembly election while some others who are not in the fray are campaigning in favour of some particular parties and candidates.

Veteran comedian Bhagwant Singh Mann of People’s Party of Punjab (PPP) is contesting against former Chief Minister and Congress Legislative Party Leader Rajinder Kaur Bhattal from Lehra seat in Sangrur. In his unique style of poll campaigning, Bhagwant, through his songs, lashes out at both the Shiromani Akali Dal-Bharatiya Janata Party alliance and the Congress for the suffering of the people of the state.

Showing his deep-rooted emotions for Punjab through his famous folk song ‘Ki Banu Punjab Da’, Maan mesmerizes the audiences during election campaigns.

Another famous folk singer Mohd Sadiq is locking horns with former bureaucrat and SAD candidate Darbara Singh Guru from Bhadaur seat in Barnala district.

As an independent candidate Gurnam Singh Gami is giving tough fight to sitting MLA Jagjiwan Singh of Shiromani Akali Dal in Samrala constituency.

All the three prominent parties SAD, Congress and BSP are taking the support of these singers to woo voters.

Certainly the local celebrities are adding colour to the ongoing electioneering in the state. Famous singer Satinder Sartaj’s song ‘Hun Der Ni Dina Ch Rab Chetti Hi Karau Balle Balle’ is gaining huge popularity.

Gurinder Guri is exposing the malfeasance of the political leaders through his item number ‘Keho Jiha Raj Punjab D Kamina, Andeya Di Rehri To Bhi Mangda Mahina’.

Babbu Mann’s banned song ‘Ik Baba Nanak Si Jene Tur Ki Dunia Tari, Ik Ajkal De Babe Ne Lal Batti’ is also hitting out at political leaders for their shoddiness.

Popular folk song like ‘Chora Nu Sare Yara Chor Kyon Disde Ne’ is arousing public awareness against corruption.

It would be interesting to see the impact of the folk singers on the voters which will be visible after the poll results are out.
