Tarn Taran: About 2.56 lakh sacks of wheat worth Rs 11 crore have rotten in the open due to negligence of government officials. According to sources, Punjab Agro had stacked two lakh sacks of wheat in Kacha Pakka village but due to lack of proper storage facilities, it rotted.

While 1,300 sacks of wheat went waste in Jodhpur, insects have been breeding in 55,000 wheat sacks stored by Markfed in Thakkarpur village.

Chairman of Kisan Sangharsh Committee of Punjab Satnam Singh Pannu said, “The district administration has time and again been informed about the ongoing wastage of foodgrains in several villages but the officials have turned a deaf ear to the problem.”

He added, “We will hold ‘Gherao’ of the Deputy Commissioner’s office on February 28 demanding strict action against the officials responsible for wastage of foodgrains.”
DC Satwant Singh Johal told the reporters, “We are writing to the Chief Secretary regarding the wastage. We will strictly sort out foodgrain storage problem ”.
