Kolkata: Former Railway Minister Dinesh Trivedi’s political clout seems to be losing sheen in the Trinamool Congress as several party MPs started to pour their criticism over Barrackpore MP’s tough stand on passenger fare hike in the Rail Budget.

Trivedi was forced to resign from the post of Railway Minister once he crossed the ‘lakshman rekha’ of TMC which however said that no action would be taken against him.

In post resignation row, Trivedi will not enjoy similar status in the party as before. Once he was considered to be close to the TMC chief and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee who had demanded the roll back of the fare hike. Later she had given an ultimatum to United Progressive Alliance chairperson Sonia Gandhi to sack Trivedi by Monday.

Several TMC MPs launched direct and indirect attack on Trivedi over the issue. Given the present scenario, it would be impossible for him to continue his association with the party.

TMC’s chief whip in the Lok Sabha, Kalyan Bandopadhyaya said, “Trivedi himself is losing self-respect.” Moreover, Union Minister of State for Health, Sudip Bandopadhyaya expressed apprehensions that Trivedi presented the anti-poor Rail Budget under influence of the Congress Party.

Several West Bengal ministers have also come down heavily on Rail Minister for his decision of hiking passenger fare. WB Urban Development Minister Firhad Hakim equated Trivedi with Meer Zafar. Industry Minister Partha Chatterjee, Transport Minister Madan Mitra, Food Minister Jyotipriya Malik and Bhatpara MLA Arjun Singh have also lashed out at Trivedi.

Earlier Union Minister of State for Tourism, Sultan Ahmed praised the rail budget but later took a U-turn given the mounting criticism against Trivedi.

The way Prime Minister Manmohan Singh regretted in the Parliament over Trivedi’s exit from the Cabinet put the TMC in awkward position.

Trivedi said, “I am still a responsible worker of the TMC.” However, people from his constituency, Barrackpore expressed sentiments for their MP.

Trivedi had a very cordial relationship with the former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi that is why he still enjoys good rapport with Sonia and Rahul.
