Arun Nehru had a successful career in corporate sector, before joining politics in the early 1980s. He was a minister of state for internal security in Rajiv Gandhi’s cabinet.

The relation between Arun Nehru and Rajiv Gandhi later got strained as the Central Bureau of Investigation accused the former of causing loss to the government exchequer in a case related to a pistol deal with Czechoslovakia in 1988 during his tenure as minister of state for internal security. However, the Supreme Court recently has stayed the proceedings in the case against Nehru.

After falling out with Rajiv Gandhi, Arun Nehru joined hands with former prime minister Vishwanath Pratap Singh and helped him to float Jan Morcha. Arun Nehru was instrumental in forming the Janata Dal government at the Centre.

Arun Nehru, a noted political columnist, used to express his views on several issues including political development in the country. Later, Arun Nehru joined the BJP.
