The incident took place late yesterday after there were rumours that the devotees could get electrocuted at the Thakur Banke Bihari temple.

A district official said the barricade at Dauji Tiraha that leads to the temple broke and in the melee that followed a woman got a mild shock from an electrical junction box in the narrow lanes.

Her infant daughter slipped out of her arms and it resulted in a stampede.

The temple management announced that it was just a rumour and urged the people to stay calm, but it took more than an hour to control the panicking devotees.

The injured have been admitted to a hospital and their condition is said to be out of danger.
