Raipur: Even as efforts are on for the release of the kidnapped Sukma district collector, four police personnel were injured on Wednesday when a group of Maoists allegedly opened fire at a police van in the neighbouring Dantewada district. One of the injured is reported to be critical.

Chhattisgarh Additional Director General of Police (naxal operations) Ram Niwas told here on Wednesday that while the team of policemen was patrolling in the weekly market held in the Bacheli area of Dantewada, some Maoists fired on their van.

In retaliation, the policemen also opened fire, but the naxalites managed to flee, Niwas said.

In the attack, an assistant police inspector, a constable, a police jawan and a Homeguard jawan were injured and the latter is reported to be critical. All of them have been admitted to hospital in Dantewada.

Following the kidnapping of Sukma Collector Alex Paul Menon, the maoists had demanded a total halt on the anti-maoists campaign in the area.
