New Delhi: The 22-year-long sordid tale of Indian death row prisoner Sarabjit Singh came to a painful end with his death on wee hours of Thursday in Jinnah hospital.

Sarabjit succumbed to injuries suffered in the barbaric and murderous attack on April 26.  The 49-year-old Sarabjit was hit with bricks and other blunt objects in Kot Lakhpat jail in Lahore.

August 28, 1990: Sarabjit Singh was arrested at Kasur border for illegally crossing the India-Pakistan border. Family remained clueless about Sarabjit for nine months. His family got a letter from Sarabjit stating about his arrest by Pakistani border forces.
1991: He was convicted by the Pakistani authorities for spying and carrying serial bomb blasts in 1990 in Lahore and Faislabad that killed 14 people. He was sentenced to death on October 3.

December 27, 2001: Pakistan High Court dismissed his appeal.

March, 2006: The Supreme Court of Pakistan rejected his review petition citing the absence of Sarabjit’s lawyer as the reason behind the order.

March 3, 2008: Then Pakistan Prime Minister Pervez Musharraf rejected his mercy plea.

April 2008: Sarabjit’s family met him in Lahore jail.

May 2008: Pakistan government indefinitely deferred Sarabjit’s execution.

June 26, 2012: News hit the headlines that Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari pardoned Sarabjit by converting his death sentence to life imprisonment. India rejoiced over the decision as the order paved way for Sarabjit’s release from Kot Lakhpat jail. In Pakistan, the maximum life imprisonment term is 14 years and Sarabjit had already spent his 22 years in jail.  Hours after reports of Sarabjit’s release emerged,   Presidential spokesman Farhatullah Babar clarified that authorities were taking steps to free another Indian named Surjeet Singh who was jailed for espionage.

August 2012: Sarabjit filed fresh mercy plea.

April 26, 2013:  Sarabjit was brutally attacked by jail inmates. He was taken to Jinnah Hospital where he slipped into coma and remained critical. Doctors announced his chances of survival as slim.

May 2, 2013: Sarabjit succumbed to his injuries in the early hours of Thursday. He breathed his last around 2 am at Jinnah hospital.
