Such is the story of Krishna Yadav, a perfect example which replicates the true essence of the saying.
Krishna Yadav, who started her journey from the streets of Delhi where she, along with her husband used to sell pickle. Krishna migrated from her native place Bulandshahar (UP) to Delhi in 1996 with her three children and husband who had lost his job. She got the job of a caretaker at a private firm in Rewlala Khanpur owned by Commdt. B.S. Tyagi.  

Commdt. Tyagi used to develop an orchard of ‘Ber’ and ‘Karonda’ under the guidance of scientists from Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Ujwa. It was during that period (2001-2001) when Krishna decided to undergo a training of three months in food processing techniques at KVK, Ujwa. The first value added products prepared after training were 100 Kg karonda (Carissa carandas) pickle and 5 kg chilly pickle with an initial investment of Rs.3000 fetching her a net profit of Rs. 5250 after sale.

After the success of Karonda pickle, she decided to produce Karonda candy as well on a trial basis but the idea didn’t materialise as the ingredients got infected. Later, she discussed the matter with the professionals and followed a scientific way. Marketing of the product was done by her husband who sold these products on hand pushed cart (rehri) at roadside in Najafgarh. Karonda candy was a new product for the customers of the area which resulted in good response and profits.

Today, Krishna manufactures 87 types of products which include various types of chutnies, pickles, preservatives, murabbas etc. under FPO tag. At present, approximately 500 quintals of fruits and vegetables are processed generating a turnover of more than Rs. 1 crore from the factory and providing employment to others.

Smt. Krishna Yadav has won various awards since past few decades: Shri Pranab Mukherjee, Hon’ble President of India, conferred the ‘Nari Shakti Puraskar-2015’ to Smt. Krishna Yadav, and on International Women’s Day (March 13, 2012), as one among 25 Most Outstanding Women of India by Mamta Sharma, chairperson, National Commission for Women. She also featured in NCW brochure along with other renowned women achievers like Smt Indra Nooyi, Dr. Sarojini Pritam, Smt Ila Pathak among others. She received numerous awards from government and non-governments entities as well.
