The resignation came shortly after the Supreme Court refused to intervene in the ongoing row between the Delhi University and University Grants Commission (UGC).

Singh had been adamant on not scrapping the FYUP as against the UGC’s order.

The DU Teachers Association welcomed Singh's resignation, saying this will make way for the university to go back to the three-year undergraduate course.

Supreme Court refuses to intervene

The Supreme Court earlier in the day dismissed a Public Interest Plea (PIL) seeking quashing of the UGC's directive to Delhi University to scrap the FYUP.

An Apex Court bench of Justices Vikramajit Sen and Shiva Kirti Singh asked the petitioner, former Delhi University Teachers Association president Aditya Narayan Mishra, to approach the Delhi High Court in this regard.

As a cloud of uncertainty looms over the controversial FYUP, a large number of colleges affiliated to the Delhi University on Tuesday deferred admissions till the crisis is resolved.
