Gadchiroli: The district police have launched a scheme to encourage the Naxalites to surrender and join the national mainstream.

"Navjeevan" aims at initiating interaction with the family members of the Naxals and persuade them to ask their kith and kin, who have taken arms, to surrender and lead a normal life, district Superintendent of Police Mohd Suvez Haque said at a press conference on Saturday evening.

As part of the project, Haque met some family members of the Naxals on March 27 (the holi was celebrated) and interacted with them. Family members of the Naxals also live in the shadow of fear as their homes are frequently raided by the police in search of extremists, he said. The initiative has been started to give relief to such family members, the SP said, adding at present nearly 300 Naxals are active in Gadchiroli district of Maharashtra.

Haque, however, clarified that the anti-Maoist operations will continue.
