New Delhi: With elevation of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for number two rank in the party, it seems that fight for the post of BJP president has intensified within the main Opposition party.

Sources in the BJP say that despite RSS’s desire to allow Gadkari, incumbent BJP president, to continue for the second consecutive term, a section of party leaders, believed to be Gadkari’s detractors have proposed Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Sushma Swaraj’s name for the post of the party. Such BJP leaders are also claiming that party patriarch LK Advani has also give his assent to Sushma’s name.

However, Sushma Swaraj rejected the speculations of her appointment as the next BJP president.

Many senior BJP leaders are opposing Gadkari’s appointment for the second term as the BJP chief on grounds of charges of corruption against him. Senior party leaders like Yashwant Sinha, Shatrughan Sinha and suspended BJP MP Ram Jethmalani had a couple of months back openly opposed Gadkari over charges of corruption against him.

BJP is going to issue notification for the election of the party president on Sunday.
