The auspicious hour to reopen the gates of the shrine dedicated to Goddess Ganga and located at a height of 10,000 feet in Uttarkashi district was decided on the occasion of Chaitra Shukla Pratipada on Monday, Gangotri temple committee sources said here on Tuesday.

The portals of Yamunotri, another Himalayan shrine which is part of the Char Dhams located in Uttarakhand, are also scheduled to be reopened on the same date but the auspicious hour for its ceremonial opening has not yet been decided, they said.

The other two major shrines of Kedarnath and Badrinath are slated to be reopened on May 4 and 5 respectively.

The Char Dhams are closed every year for nearly six months during winter when they become snowbound only to be reopened during April-May when lakhs of devotees from all over the country and abroad visit the shrines.
