Rajkot: The Gau Seva Ayog has joined hands with various educational institutes and district jails in Gujarat for setting up of "Gau-Shalas" in their premises.

"To create awareness among the people about importance of the cow in human life the Commission has decided to set up Gau-Shalas in premises of various educational institutes and district jails of the state," its President Vallabh Kathiriya, said here on Friday.

Kathiriya claimed that Rajkot central jail has set up Gaushala in jail premiss where three prisoners facing life term sentence are taking care of nearly a dozen cows since January this year.

While few educational institutes including Vivekanand Institute of Hotel Management (VIHM), Gardi Vidya Peeth and Geetanjali schools have also set gau-shalas in their institute premises.

He said that he was inspired to set up the gau-shalas after visiting one in Ahmedabad Jail and added that the Commission is hoping to set up such cow sheds and centres gradually in jails like HimmatNagar, Nadiad, Vadodara and Junagadh.

Rajkot Jail Superintendent Arun Vyas said that after setting up the Gau Shala in jail premises the prisoners entrusted with the responsibility of taking care of cows have changed completely.

"The three prisoners who are taking care of the cows have changed completely and become more polite" Vyas claimed.
