New Delhi: The same-sex marriage bill was on Monday cleared through the House of Lords, evoking a round of celebration among gay rights campaigners outside the British Parliament.

This move implies that England and Wales may see the first gay marriage in early 2014, as the bill is set to become law by the end of this week.

The legislation is now passed back to the lower House of Commons for final review before being formulated into law.
