Imphal: Normal life was paralysed across Manipur on Tuesday due to the 24-hour general strike called by a local committee to protest the killing of a PHED department security guard and his son by militants.

The strike, called by the Joint Action Committee (JAC), began from midnight last night demanding immediate arrest of the accused.

All the hill and valley districts were also affected by the general strike as markets and shops remained closed.

Ibomcha Singh and his son Yaiph were abducted from their official quarter at Irilbung in Imphal East district area on December seven by some militants, who called themselves as Kangleipak Communist Party-Mobil Task Force (Kesho faction), and demanded Rs 20 lakh from PHED for their release.

Their bullet-riddled bodies were found at Yairipok area in Thoubal district on December 16 last.

Several organisations have condemned the killings and expressed "utter shock" over the incident.

Manipur Public Health Engineering Department (PHED) minister T N Haokip has also expressed shock over the killings.

"Chowkidar Ibombcha Singh was not even a regular employee," Haokip said, adding the killers were "not human beings."
