Berlin: Police in Germany say a sports official has died after being struck in the throat by a javelin at an athletics event on Monday.
A police spokesman in the western city of Duesseldorf says the 74-year-old man died in hospital on Monday.
Spokesman Andre Hartwig told The Associated Press that police have opened an investigation into the man's death but that initial indications were it had been a "tragic accident."
He said the 15-year-old athlete who threw the javelin was receiving psychological counselling.
Hundreds of athletes took part in the youth athletics meet at a stadium in the Rath district of Duesseldorf.
