Ghaziabad: A public hearing for granting environmental clearance to a private company, seeking sand mining on Yamuna banks, was cancelled on Tuesday following protests and vandalism by villagers.

Residents of Pachyara village tried to pull down the tent and threw tables in front of Ghaziabad's Additional District Magistrate and officials of Pollution Control Board present at the hearing in a primary school in Pachyara village.

According to the villagers, the environment assessment report was prepared without consulting them and the officials present didn't have convincing answers to their grievances. They said the land belonged to them and without their consent no sand mining activity could take place.

"All the objections by the villagers will be heard and would be forwarded to the Ministry of Environment and Forest," Regional Officer of UP Pollution Control Board (UPPCB) T U Khan said.
