Etawah: A 20-year-old girl was allegedly gang-raped and set on fire by a youth and his accomplices at Desarmau village under Ekdil police station area in Etawah, the police said on Friday. The girl was reportedly in relationship with one Farman, a resident of the same village. The incident took place on Thursday when she went to his house to convince him for marriage.
According to the FIR lodged by the victim's brother, Farman and five of his associates raped the girl and when she threatened to disclose the matter, she was set ablaze by the accused. The girl who was rushed to the district hospital, was later referred to Safai hospital where she is said to be in critical condition, the police said.
The villagers have, however, alleged that the girl herself sprinkled kerosene and tried to set self on fire in order to pressurize Farman, as he was not interested in marrying her. The girl accidentally caught fire when the youth tried to snatch the matchstick.
The accused Farman and his family members have fled the village and efforts are on to nab them, the police said. Infuriated over the incident, the locals tried to set Farman's house ablaze but the village elders intervened and brought the situation under control.
