Shillong: Security forces on Thursday shot dead a Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) militant in an encounter at Nongalbibra area of East Garo Hills district of Meghalaya, police said.

Acting on a tip off on the presence of a group of GNLA militants in the area, a team of Meghalaya's Special Weapon and Tactics (SWAT) commandos and CRPF's COBRA rushed to the spot.

However, while the team was on the way, the militants opened fire indiscriminately which resulted in retaliation from the police.

In the encounter, a young cadre was shot dead while there was no casualty among security forces. The slain militant is yet to be identified.

Declared as a terror organisation in January this year, GNLA is actively involved in killing and extorting money from businessmen in the three Garo Hills district.
