According to an official release, Gogoi met Union Human Resource Development Minister Smriti Irani in the national capital and discussed the education scenario of the state.

"Gogoi sought financial support of Rs 1,200 crore for infrastructure development of 10 state universities and Rs 250 crore for setting up of a women's university on the lines of SNDT at Jorhat," the release said.

He also sought a special incentive package for development of higher education and adequate funding for promotion of literacy and education in the state.

"A special incentive package for Assam would boost the higher education sector by attracting private investments," Gogoi said.

The Assam Chief Minister also urged Irani to facilitate establishment of an Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in Guwahati.

He told the HRD Minister that setting up of a management institute of international repute would not only cater to the aspirations of young talents of the state and the region but also act as a research and development centre for addressing the problems of the region.

Gogoi offered all possible help in setting up the institute and informed that the state government would provide the required land in Guwahati.

Besides, the Chief Minister emphasized on importance of cooperative management education in the state and underscored the need of support of the Central government to develop Assam Rajiv Gandhi University of Cooperative Management.
