Segu Naina Mohamed Shektheen Sha, the accused, was remanded in Customs' custody till June 19 by a local court, said Milind Lanjewar, Additional Commissioner, Customs.

Acting on a tip-off, AIU officers found eight bars of gold, each weighing one kg, worth Rs 1.99 crore in total, in two rear-side toilets of the Jet Airways Muscat-Mumbai flight 9W-539, he said.

"A passenger called Segu Naina Mohamed Shektheen Sha was intercepted and he admitted to hiding the gold inside the toilet. He said the gold was to be retrieved during the domestic leg of the aircraft to Calcutta," added Lanjewar.

Sha acted as a courier and he was following his handler's instructions, the officer said. The handler's identity was yet to be ascertained.

When asked if possible involvement of flight crew would be probed, he said, "The crew members may or may not have been involved. This will be verified only after a thorough investigation."
