Berhampur (Orissa): 'Golden girl' Minati Das has been accorded a grand reception by Berhampur Municipal Corporation for winning a gold medal at the Commonwealth Youth Weightlifting Championship held in South Africa recently.

Mayor SS Das handed her over a cheque of Rs 10,000 to the Class X student of a government high school in Berhampur on Tuesday and said she was the pride of the southern Orissa town.

"We are proud of her. Berhampur has produced another international weightlifter after K Ravi Kumar and Bijay Satapathy", said the mayor.

Ravi Kumar and Satapathy, both from Berhampur had won gold medals in the Commonwealth games.

"My next aim is to compete in the Commonwealth games. I am confident of achieving my goal with your blessings," said Das, for whom the South African meet was the first global platform. She won gold medal in the 44-kg category.

"She has immense talent. We hope she carries on her achievements in the future," said Narayan Sahu, general secretary of the Orissa Weightlifting Association and secretary of Berhampur based Veer Hanuman Club.

The Veer Hanuman Club has produced Minati, Ravi Kumar and Satapathy.
