Today is the shortest day and longest night of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. Google has marked the occasion with an animated ‘knitted’ doodle. Created by German illustrator Christoph Niemann, Google Doodle shows a pair of hands weaving a glove into the shape of the search engine's logo.
Google had used the same animated doodle on June 21 this year to mark the first day of winter in the Southern Hemisphere.

During the winter solstice in the Northern Hemisphere, the sun is the farthest south. And during the winter solstice in the Southern Hemisphere, the sun is the farthest north.

The solstice happens twice in a year that is in winter and summer. Opposite to winter solstice, during the summer solstice days are the longest and nights are the shortest.

While the winter solstice in the Northern Hemisphere occurs either on December 21 or December 22, it occurs in the Southern Hemisphere on June 21 or June 22.
