New Delhi: Google on Friday paid tribute to German bacteriologist Julius Richard Petri on his 161st birth anniversary with an animated doodle.

The visitors will see six Petri dishes in Google's colors soon after logging on to the website of the search engine.

Petri invented a culture dish, also called Petri plate, which is used to culture bacteria on agar (a substance made from algae) plates that helped to identify the bacteria responsible for diseases. In the contemporary times, biologists use the Petri dish to culture cells.

Julius Richard Petri was born on May 31, 1852 in Barmen, Germany and studied medicine.

Petri breathed his last on December 20, 1921.
