Gmail has more than doubled its user base since 2012, when the number stood at just 425 million. But as well as attracting more consumers, the way people access the service has also changed. Pichai noted during his presentation that 75 percent of users now check their mail via mobile.

Google Inc had quietly' rolled out a new login screen for Gmail and split the process into separate process to prepare for future authentication systems that complement passwords.

The new update separates the login process where earlier users needed to enter their username and password on the same page.  The users now have to enter your username and then they will be directed to a second page where users will have to enter the password.
