Kolkata: In a bid to familiarise the people about internet technology and its usage, the popular search engine brand “Google” began its bus journey across West Bengal here on Thursday.

“We had started the new concept of touring states with a view to enlighten people about the advantages of internet in our day-to-day life. We hope to create awareness amongst the masses especially the people belonging to small towns so that they become more self-dependant in their respective lives,” said Google India director Vinay Goel on Thursday.

Goel said the tour aims at bringing awareness amongst the government officials, teachers and students and even the common man about basics of the internet technique. Services like searching items, e-mails, social networking, online mapping and others are highly important in the internet age. “We believe that continuous efforts can only enable them to utilize the knowledge in correct manner,” he added.

Besides Kolkata, it will travel across 10 towns of the state including Durgapur, Asansol, Kharagpur, Ulberia, Chandannagar, Haldia, Bankura, Purulia, Baharampur and Chandannagar.

Google India has tied up with NIIT which will train and aware the people about the technology.

The internet bus has already travelled 11 states covering 130 towns and touching millions, he said.
As per the survey carried by the company, since the start of the campaign more than 20 lakh people have used the internet service for the first time.
