He directed the Railway Ministry to ensure that relief operations were carried out smoothly and that all those injured in the Gorakhdham Express mishap were provided the best possible medical care.
    
The Prime Minster sanctioned an ex-gratia payment of Rs two lakh each to the next of kin of the deceased from the Prime
Minister's National Relief Fund and Rs 50,000 each for those seriously injured in the accident, a PMO statement said.

The Indian Railways has ordered an inquiry into the Gorakhdham train mishap in Uttar Pradesh on Monday that killed at least 20 people and injured over 82 others.

The inquiry would be conducted by the Commissioner of Railway Safety, North East Circle, PK Bajpayee, who will be visiting the accident site.

The Indian Railways has declared a compensation of Rs one lakh for the next of the kin of those killed and Rs 50,000 for those with grievous injury and Rs 10,000 for passengers with minor injuries.

President Pranab Mukherjee and Prime Minister Narendra Modi had on Monday condoled the loss of lives in the train accident in Uttar Pradesh’s Sant Kabir Nagar district as they assured that the district administration would take all needed steps to help those affected.
