New Delhi: In a bid to caution people about the health hazards of tobacco consumption, the Health Ministry has issued a notification of publishing more horrific graphical warnings on tobacco products. The tobacco products will carry more dreadful picture in comparison to cigarette.

According to the new notification, the tobacco packets will have to give horrifying images of cancer patients, whereas, cigarette and bidi manufacturers have been given the options of four sets of soft pictures. Three of them will be of healthy person with a different lung colour while the fourth one comes with the graphic of oral cancer, sources said.

But the government has not given any clear direction in this connection, so cigarette companies are likely to take advantage of it by opting a soft picture of warning.

The government has issued the notification in the wake of pressure from all quarters. The Health Ministry has given time till December 1 to replace current pictures on the products.

Regarding the health hazard of tobacco consumption, Dr Pankaj Chaturvedi of Mumbai based Tata Memorial Hospital, said that use of tobacco in any form is dangerous for health.

Directorate of Advertising and Visual Publicity has prepared the warning ads for the Health Ministry. The Ministry has also decided to change warning pictures after every two years.
