Patna: Bihar State Pollution Control Board (BSPCB) directed on Wednesday all government medical institutions in the state to implement the Bio-Medical Waste (Management and Handling) Act, 1998, for disposing bio-medical wastes in view of health hazards to the people.
Presiding over a meeting of superintendents of government medical colleges and hospitals, BSPCB chairman Subhash Chandra Singh asked them to put in place equipment like incinerators and shredders for treatment and disposal of bio-medical wastes as under the central act in this regard.
Government medical institutions failing to implement the act would be dealt with sternly, he said. BSPCB has issued show cause notices to 333 health centres for its failure to abide by the norms, while 131 health centres have been directed to take the measures at the earliest.
