Chandigarh: The government is planning to implement roaming-free telecom services for users from October this year. With that, there will not be any additional charges for the mobile subscribers travelling outside their local network areas. The Minister for Telecom and Information Technology, Kapil Sibal, informed about the plan on Sunday.

While participating as chief guest in the annual prize function of MCM DAV College for Woman in Sector-36 of Chandigarh, Sibal said that the Ministries is working seriously towards implementing roaming free services. However, the Minister also admitted that there is no consensus among telecom companies over the issue of roaming free services.

The minister also added that some of the telecom companies are opposing roaming free services since the beginning. The telecom companies are expected to account huge losses with the beginning of roaming charge free era. According to an estimate, telecom companies earn 10 percent of its total income from roaming charges.
