Munger (Bihar): Expressing concern over the skewed sex ratio in Bihar, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Thursday said his government is putting emphasis on female literacy.

"For 1,000 males there are only 918 females at present, while in Munger district the ratio was even lower at 879 women per 1,000 men. This ratio is bad, we need to balance it," Kumar told a public meeting.

Stating that as a corrective measure, his government is encouraging education among females, Nitish said, "It is seen that girls who have cleared matriculation have only two children."

He said his government has taken several steps like providing girls free bicycles and uniforms to motivate them to get educated.

As a result of the bicycle programme, number of girls registered in high schools has risen to 6.5 lakh now compared to 1.70 lakh before the start of the scheme, Kumar added.
