Chandigarh: Like Cabinet Minister Jairam Ramesh, the Akali Dal-led Punjab government too has considered wearing gown during convocation a symbol of slavery. Chief Minister Prakash Singh Badal has decided to end the tradition.

After the opposition of Health Minister Laxami Kant Chawla, the education department of state has asked the principals of various colleges to send their opinions in this connection.

A public opinion will be made so that they could decide whether to continue with the practice or not, he said.

The Education Minister of the state too shares the same feeling, saying, “The wearing gown during such ceremonies is not a part of Indian culture rather it is a custom which has been imposed on us by the Britishers and it is a symbol of slavery.”
