Allahabad: Remembering the 1954 stampede at the Mahakumbh Mela in which over 800 were killed and 100 others had sustained injuries, the government has decided to deploy National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) during the 2013 Kumbh Mela in Allahabad.

The two companies from the ninth battalion of NDRF, which is known for specialized response to natural and man-made disasters, will be put in place from December 26 at the site where mega gathering of people will take place during Mahakumbh.

This is the same 300-member Indian contingent, which landed in Fukushima last year, after the devastating nuclear disaster, contributed to the relief and rescue operations in this seaside town that was completely washed away. There will be one commandant, assistant commandant and one deputy commandant in the team.

According to Prime Minister’s Office, the headquater of the ninth battalion of NDRF is in Patna. The battalion comprises of Navy men and paramilitary forces. All selected members from different armed forces are given one month’s special training before being sent to NDRF.

The month long Kumbh Mela at Sangam in Allahabad is one of the largest fairs of the world and is attended by millions of pilgrims.
