Chandigarh: Punjab government has decided to take stringent action to curb the use of narcotics and mobile phones inside the jails.

The authorities are keeping an eye on the jail inmates as well as deployed staff members of jails.

Currently, around 19000 prisoners are lodged in various jails of Punjab. State government has already decided to set up rehabilitation centre in all central jails of the state.

Punjab Jail Minister, Sarwan Singh Phillaur said this while attending a high-level meeting of jail officials on Tuesday here. He also said that some projects have already been devised which are aimed at engaging jail inmates in various positive activities. He further said that the jail officials have approached to some business houses seeking their support for this purpose.                                                                                         

Speaking about measures to beef up security inside Jails, the minister said that jammers will be installed in sensitive jails of Nabha and Sangrur to prevent prisoners from using mobile phones. To promote awareness among the jail inmates about physical fitness, the state government has started ‘Prison Olympics’. Recently, the event was organized in Patiala whereas in Ludhiana, the prison Olympic will take place in February.

Union Principal Secretary D S Bains and Jail IG Jagjeet Singh were also present in the meeting.
