New Delhi: Sachin Tendulkar, who has brought many laurels for the country through his achievements in the game and actress Rekha, known for her brilliant and emotional portrayals in Hindi cinema in the 80s, are among four eminent persons who have been recommended for nomination as members of the Rajya Sabha.

The Congress has offered to nominate Sachin and Rekha in the President's quota. Sachin and actress Rakha will become members of the Parliament under a provision of the constitution that allows the President to nominate 12 members to the Upper House.

According to sources, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has sent a letter to the Ministry of Home Affairs which has been forwarded to President Pratibha Patil for notification. Article 80 of the Constitution provides for nomination of persons having special knowledge or practical experience in matters such as literature, science, art and social service.

39-year-old Tendulkar's nomination to the Rajya Sabha has come as a surprise against the backdrop of a long-standing demand for conferring of Bharat Ratna on him for his contribution to the game. He completed the historic achievement of scoring 100 international centuries in March this year.

57-year-old Rekha was one of the top heroines of the 80s in Hindi films and and had won several national awards in her acting career.

People trying to gain mileage out of Sachin: Harsha

Meanwhile, cricket analyst Harsha Bhogle has said that Sachin doesn’t have experience of governing and people are trying to gain mileage out of Tendulkar. “I don’t think it is the greatest idea. He doesn’t have the experience of governing or doing social work. People are trying to gain mileage out of Tendulkar,” Bhogle said.

BJP for Bharat Ratna to Sachin

On the other hand, the main Opposition party BJP once against reiterated its demand to confer Bharat Ratna for Sachin. BJP spokesperson Prakash Javadekar said, “We welcome Sachin in the Parliament but we want Bharat Ratna for him.”

Tendulkar would be the first sportsman and a cricketer to be nominated to the Upper House of the Parliament. The House already has a member from the film world in Javed Akhtar, an eminent lyricist and script writer in Hindi cinema.
