New Delhi: Union Ministry of Environment and Forests has recently granted clearance to the Tori-Shibpur segment of a proposed rail link. This rail link is expected to ensure a regular coal supply from the coal blocks of North Karanpura to the thermal power plants in Jharkhand.

Another segment of Shibpur-Hazaribagh is in the queue to get the approval. In the absence of this link, two major coal blocks of Central Coalfield, Amrapali and Magadh are not able to supply.

According to the Coal India Limited, about 10 crore tonnes coal supply would be possible per month from the two coal blocks of North Karanpura with the Shibpur-Hazaribagh rail link completion. These coal blocks have been allocated for the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC), Tndwa Super Thermal Power (Jharkhand) and Flood Super Thermal Power (Bihar).

NTPC, which is near to complete its two power plants, is mounting pressure on the government to start the work on rail link soon.
