Shimla: Green tax on vehicles from outside the city, which is expected to yield a revenue of Rs 6 crore annually, has been proposed in 2012-13 budget of Shimla Municipal Corporation (SMC) that leaves a huge deficit of Rs 138.26 crore.
Presenting the budget, The Mayor of the Corporation Madhu Sood said the green tax on the vehicle would be imposed from 1 April this year on the pattern of Manali and the income from this tax was estimated at Rs 6 crore annually. The House has already passed the proposal to impose the green tax.
The deficit, said the Mayor, would be offset by a liability of 139.28 crore due on the Irrigation and Public Health department and State Power Board for supply of water and power to the state capital upto March 31, 2013.
The proposed flat water rates on each household was deferred for the next meeting following a demand of some members that the issue should be studied in depth by the Corporation.
The income of the SMC for 2012-13 has been estimated at Rs 110.83 crore while the expenditure was pegged at Rs 250.07 crore.
The Mayor said the union government has sanctioned Rs 10.20 crore under the JNNURM for computerization of working of the Corporation.
