Ahmedabad: BJP MLA Bhavsinh Rathod on Monday defected to Congress, ahead of next month's Gujarat Assembly elections, claiming "disappointment" with the saffron party over development of OBCs.

"I had joined BJP with the hope that it will take steps for development of Patan and progress of OBCs but I am disappointed now and regret my decision and hence I have returned to my home," Rathod, who represents Sami-Harij Assembly constituency, said.

Rathod joined the Congress at its convention here.

He was elected MLA from the same constituency in 2007 Assembly polls on Congress ticket and just before 2009 general elections resigned and joined BJP to contest Patan Lok Sabha seat which he lost to Congress.

In by-elections to Sami-Harij Assembly constituency, which he had vacated, Rathod contested on BJP ticket and won.

"I strongly believe that Congress is capable enough to fulfil the promises it has made under 'Gujarat People Development Vision 2012'," he said.

Recently, former BJP MLA Jitendra Patel also crossed over to Congress.
