New Delhi: Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday met newly appointed BJP president Rajnath Singh in national capital.

Before leaving for Delhi, Modi had tweeted, "Leaving for Delhi. Will meet Shri Rajnath Singhji and congratulate him on his taking over as BJP President."

Modi congratulated newly appointed party president Rajnath Singh. Sources said that Modi is likely to be given bigger responsibility.

Modi is considered to be close to Rajnath Singh. It is also being assumed that Rajnath will not put spoke in the wheel of BJP’s poster boy Modi who is likely to put hat in the race for Prime Minister of the country.

When asked by reporters about the purpose of his visit, Modi said that he had come to convey his best wishes to Singh and added that they had detailed discussions about 2014 Lok Sabha elections. "There was a discussion of 2014. It was quite elaborate discussions," Modi said after he and Singh emerged from the meeting at the BJP president's residence here.

Modi said that he had sought time from Singh to convey his best wishes. "I had come to congratulate him and ask him what I should do. How should I work ahead. What suggestions he has in relation to the state government. I sought and got his guidance in that respect. BJP's Gujarat unit should be useful in the service of the country, we also had a detailed discussion about that," he said.

Gujarat assembly election results have brightened Modi’s chance in the national politics.

In a political drama, Singh was elected unopposed as BJP president on Wednesday after he filed nomination papers for the post. Singh, who headed the party from 2006 to 2009, emerged as the consensus candidate after Nitin Gadkari, facing allegations of dubious funding of his company, was forced out of the race for party president's post.
