Bhavnagar (Gujarat): The high profile Bhavnagar Rural assembly constituency will witness high voltage political battle as senior Congress leader and Leader of Opposition Shaktisinh Gohil is contesting against powerful BJP minister Purshottam Solanki.

Gohil is the only Congress leader who has been challenging Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi to contest election against him.

Gohil filed his nominations from Bhavnagar Rural thinking that Purshottam Solanki will shift to nearby Talja constituency. But in a dramatic move, the BJP announced Solanki’s name for Bhavnagar seat.
During the 2007 assembly polls, Gohil proved to be a face-saver for the Congress as he was the only candidate to win a seat for the party in Bhavnagar which has 9 seats.

Solanki, who is facing serious charges of corruption, has dominance over Koli community in the constituency. However, Gohil belonging to Kashtriya also has potential to win the seat.

The importance of the seat can be understood by the fact that former BJP president Rajnath Singh chose Bhavnagar to start his poll campaign. Singh promised the voters that he will visit Bhavnagar again if Solanki wins the elections.
