New Delhi: Gutka manufacturing companies not only top the tax evasion chart but are also the frontrunners when it comes to cheating the government exchequers.

According to the official records of Directorate General of Central Excise Intelligence office, Gutka manufacturing companies alone accounted for 30 per tax evasion in the last financial year.

A senior official from Central Board of Excise and Customs (CBEC) said, “In 2010-11, the department detected excise tax evasion worth Rs 1,356 crore out of which the share of Gutka companies was Rs 400 crore.”

The departmental investigation indicated that in an effort to save themselves from excise duty, the Gutka manufacturers were claiming a low production rate.

DGCEI officials are also keeping a close eye on iron rod making companies who are in the second position in central excise duty evasion list. Significantly, all the companies are required to deposit excise duty on the basis of their production quantity, which goes directly to the account of central government exchequers.

The senior official of CBEC said, “During 2010-11, DGCEI caught 1190 cases of tax evasion worth Rs 5,708 crore. Out of which, Rs 4,352crore was evaded as service tax and Rs 1356 crore as excise duty.”

Meanwhile DGCEI has recovered Rs 431 crore tax from the defaulters.
