New Delhi: With Assam Chief Minsiter Tarun Gogoi’s deadline for state police to apprehend the culprits of a week old molestation incident ending on Monday, only six of the accused have been arrested and many others are still absconding. The Chief Minister had set a deadline of 48 hours two-day back after outcry across the country over police inaction in this case.

State police is conducting search operation at large scale in Assam as well as in other states like Odisha where absconding accused are believed to be hiding.

Meanwhile, Odisha police administration has refuted the reports that the main accused of the incident, Amarjyoti Kalita, was arrested in the state on Sunday terming such reports as mere rumours.

Two more persons involved in the shameful act were arrested on Sunday and a police official suspended for dereliction of duty amid ongoing raids in Assam and neighbouring states to nab the remaining culprits.

Speaking on the arrested culprits, senior superintendent of police, Guwahati city, Apurba Jabon Barua on Sunday had said, "The total number of arrested persons in Monday's molestation incident is now six."

But he did not divulge from where they were apprehended. The names of the accused arrested on Sunday are- Diganta Basumatary and Navajyoti Deka. Speaking further SSP Apurba Jabon Barua had also added that sub-inspector Subhan Baruah of Dispur police station was suspended. But the prime accused Amarjyoti Kalita is, however, still at large.

State police come under severe criticism from various quarters with allegations being made that cops reached the spot around 45 minutes after the molestation of the girl in the city's busy Christianbasti area on GS Road.
