The incident took place on Tuesday on a busy railway platform. In his defence, the head constable, employed with the railway police claims that the boy is a petty thief and was caught red-handed.

In the video, the policeman is seen bashing the boy's head to the ground, picking him up by the neck, and hitting him again while the onlookers watch in stunned silence. After the boy loses consciousness, the policeman drags him using a cloth around his neck like a leash.

The authorities have failed to answer why the alleged thief was not taken to the police station. The head constable has reportedly claimed that the boy 'ran away before he could be taken to the police station'.

The constable has been suspended and an inquiry has been ordered.
