Washington: The Obama Administration has said it supports any Palestinian reconciliation effort that promotes the cause of peace in the region, but reiterated that it still considers Hamas a terrorist organisation which targets civilians.

"To play a constructive role in achieving peace, any Palestinian government must accept the Quartet principles and renounce violence, abide by past agreements, and recognize Israel's right to exist," said Tommy Vietor, spokesman of the National Security Council Spokesman.

Reacting to reports that rival Palestinian groups Hamas and Fatah have reached an "understanding" to set up a transitional unity government and hold elections, Vietor said the US is seeking more information on it.

"As we have said before, the United States supports Palestinian reconciliation on terms which promote the cause of peace. Hamas, however, is a terrorist organisation which targets civilians," Vietor said.

Meanwhile Congresswoman, Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, Chairman, House Foreign Affairs Committee, said the reported agreement between Fatah and Hamas means that a Foreign
Terrorist Organisation which has called for the destruction of Israel will be part of Palestinian Authority government.

The US taxpayer funds should not and must not be used to support those who threaten US security, our interests, and our vital ally, Israel, she said.
