New Delhi: The first sci-fi hero of Bollywood and the jhakas actor, Anil Kapoor, turns 52 today. With over 100 Bollywood movies to his credit, Anil Kapoor’s recent foray in Hollywood with ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ and ‘Mission Impossible 4’ has started earning him accolades in the international film arena.
Anil Kapoor's 31-year-long voyage in Bollywood is a rags-to-riches story. From spending his childhood in a chawl in Mumbai to walking into global recognition, Anil Kapoor has seen it all.

He is one of the few moustached men in Bollywood (the only film he was seen without a moustache was Lamhe) who not only made it a style statement but also set it as a trademark.

Born in a middleclass Punjabi family in Mumbai in 1959, Anil Kapoor always kindled the dream of heading into the glamour world. Being the son of Surinder Kapoor, the cousin of iconic actor Prithviraj Kapoor, Anil Kapoor had Bollywood in his sights right from the beginning. His father also used to work as a secretary to Shammi Kapoor.

Little Anil was a die-heard fan of legendary showman Raj Kapor and used to watch all his movies. As a child he used to mimic Raj Kapoor.

Being scatterbrained at studies, he was thrown out of college and then clueless, Anil tried to get an admission in the Pune Film Institute where he failed the written test. But destiny had already planned a place for him in Bollywood. Anil could see light of hope at the end of the tunnel when he enrolled for acting classes.

Bollywood calling

Though Anil Kapoor made his silver screen debut with Hamhare Tumhare (1979) in a character role, his first lead role was in 'Woh Saat Din'(1983) opposite Padmini Kolhapure. And from then there was no looking back.

Anil-Padmini pair was loved by the audiences and this movie marked the entry of a promising star in the film industry. Then came the film which gave Anil Kapoor numero-uno status, Mr India (1987). His sizzling chemistry with Sridevi wooed the audiences. This movie is still remembered as one of the greatest entertainers of all times.

During the 80s, he kept the show going with hits like Saaheb, Janbaaz, Insaaf Ki Awaaz and Chameli Ki Shaadi.

After a series of successful films, Anil earned his first Filmfare Best Actor Award for his performance in N. Chandra's Tezaab in 1988, and later for Indra Kumar's Beta in 1992.

He struck a right balance between commercial masala films as well as substantive appearances in films like Thikana, Parinda and Eeshwar.
Anil Kapoor’s more than three decades long career was full of many ups and downs. During the 90s when he had already established himself as a superstar, movies like Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja and Trimurti not just turned out to be complete disasters but also shook his image in the industry.

Unlike many other actors, Anil Kapoor has quite a consistent filmy career with big hits and wide acclaims. He always had a quick comeback after flops which showed his grit and raring-to-go attitude.

He bounced back on the success track with hits like Loafer (1996), Judaai (1996), Deewana Mastana (1997), Biwi No.1 (1999) and Hum Aapke Dil Mein Rehte Hain (1999). In fact, his performance in Taal was extremely appreciated and he won Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Award for the film.

The film industry in the late 80s and early 90s was ruled by the magnetic pair of Anil Kapoor and Madhuri Dixit. Tezaab, the first film to highlight this sizzling jodi was a super hit. They gave numerous hits like Beta, Ram Lakhan, Jamai Raja, Parinda. They were last seen together in semi-hit Pukaar. With these hits rumours of Anil-Madhuri relationship started making the rounds in Bollywood which lead to friction between them.

In a recent interview, when Anil Kapoor was asked to comment on rumours about his link-up with Madhuri Dixit during their heydays, he laughingly replied, “Woh toh maine khud dale the! I had spread those rumours myself to bring some spice in my otherwise boring life!”

Whether it's critically acclaimed Pukar, which fetched him his first National Film Award in the Best Actor category or his power-packed appearance in Nayak, cine buffs loved him in all kinds of roles.

Till now he is considered as one of the most bankable stars in Bollywood. His comic timing in No entry and Welcome was highly appreciated.

Hollywood venture

New Delhi: Bollywood superstar Anil Kapoor has been catapulted into the global spotlight for his award-winning performance as creepy quiz show host Prem Kumar in the smash hit movie "Slumdog Millionaire(2008). The movie won international awards like Golden Globe and the Oscars.

Also, he shared the screen with Hollywood superstar Tom Cruise in MI4. Anil Kapoor’s portrayal of a villain in the much acclaimed MI4 has set him way ahead of other Bollywood actors still trying to bag a role in Hollywood.
